Ring protection with Datacom optical devices

By Michel de Freitas Caldeira – Pre-Sales Analyst

The unavailability of redundancy of optical ring links ends up increasing the operating costs of the internet provider/operator. To avoid interruption of services, emergency displacements or even activation of the teams on duty, Datacom has in its portfolio the DM962-OPU, DM964-OPU and DM962-OPU-C optical switches for protection of optical rings. Optical switches promote the by-pass (bypass) of the link element in the event of a power outage, thus ensuring the continuity of the optical ring's redundancy, thus keeping the other services active and protected.

In this article, we will demonstrate how to apply a ring topology using a DM962-OPU, DM964-OPU and DM962-OPU-C optical switch.

1 – Products

The DM962-OPU and DM962-OPU-C are functionally focused on one-fiber bidirectional ring links, while the DM964-OPU is functionally focused on two-fiber unidirectional ring links.

The DM962-OPU and DM964-OPU feature SC/UPC single-mode connectors, full range AC/DC power supply, compact dimensions for 19-inch RACK installation at 1U height.

Main features:

  • Ports with SC/UPC single-mode connectors;
  • Interfaces with one or two fibers;
  • Low insertion loss, less than 1dB;
  • Optical operating window from 1260nm to 1610nm;
  • Optical switch durability of 5 million cycles;
  • 93 to 250VAC or 36 to 72VDC power supply with automatic selection;
  • Low consumption 6.5W;
  • Compact cabinet (195x200x44mm) in 1U height, for mounting on a 19” RACK;
  • Optional accessory MA-01, for installation in a 19” rack with customer terminal equipment;
  • No configuration needed;
  • By-pass switching by voltage command input, or dry contact or test button activation.

The DM962-OPU-C features SC/UPC single-mode connectors, full range AC power supply, compact dimensions for 19-inch RACK installation at 1U height.

Main features:

  • Ports with SC/UPC single-mode connectors;
  • Interfaces with one or two fibers;
  • Low insertion loss, less than 1dB;
  • Optical operating window from 1260nm to 1610nm;
  • Optical switch durability of 5 million cycles;
  • External AC source full range from 100 to 240VAC, with automatic selection;
  • Low consumption 5W;
  • Compact cabinet (195x200x44mm) in 1U height, for mounting in 19” RACK;
  • Optional accessory MA-01, for installation in a 19” rack with customer terminal equipment;
  • No configuration needed;

2 – Topology

The DM962-OPU or DM962-OPU-C must be installed together with the equipment corresponding to the optical ring node to be bypassed in case of failure. The diagram below indicates the topology adopted considering rings of a fiber (bidirectional), that is, with different wavelengths.

Figure 4. Ring Installation of a Fiber Using DM962-OPU-C

The DM964-OPU must be installed next to the equipment corresponding to the optical ring node to be bypassed in case of failure. The diagram below indicates the topology adopted considering rings of two fibers (unidirectional), that is, each fiber will adopt a traffic direction between the equipment.

3 – Operation

The figure below illustrates a situation where six devices belonging to a bidirectional ring are equipped with the DM962-OPU-C optical switch. In a no-fail situation, the DM962-OPU-C optical switch directs traffic to the ring element to which it is connected via the CLIENT ports.

Distances:

  • DATACENTER x LINK A = 10km
  • LINK A x LINK B = 10km

To determine the range of transceivers used in client equipment, the drop (by-pass) of at least one neighboring client must be taken into account. When there is a by-pass in the network, the distance between two adjacent active nodes will increase and the attenuation introduced by the additional length of optical fiber needs to be met, that is, the distances will be added.

Figure 7. Ring topology of a fiber using failed DM962-OPU-C

By-pass switching occurs due to power failure!

In our example with the occurrence of a power failure in “LINK A” after the DM962-OPU-C has made a BY-PASS link, we started to consider a total distance of 20km between the “DATACENTER” and “LINK B”, making so that the data traffic is switched to the BY-PASS link ensuring the continuity of the ring redundancy. Returning the power to the “LINK A” the ring will have the main protection.

Two Fiber Ring Topology using DM964-OPU only differs in installation as shown in Figure 5, protection processes and mechanisms will be the same.

The use of an optical key is a solution that adds security to the legacy network and the new IP networks, which includes numerous advantages for our customers, as it combines service quality, CAPEX reduction and high availability and protection of services.
