Datacom is always bringing technological solutions to the market that combine high performance with an excellent cost-benefit ratio. Thus, to complement the line of Wifi6 AX1800 solutions, Datacom is launching the ONU DM986-416 AX1800.

The DM986-416 is a complete GPON ONU model compatible with ITU-T G.984 and ITU-T G.988 standards for high-speed optical fiber access applications, allowing data, voice and video over IP for home users. Like all other Datacom ONU models, the DM986-416 does not have locks for operation in OLTs from other manufacturers.

The ONU DM986-416 comes with Wi-Fi 802.11ax technology, providing an extremely fast, reliable network with greater capacity, in addition to backward compatibility with previous versions of Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/ac. This equipment features 802.11ax technology at both 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz, with the 2.4GHz band providing a rate of up to 574Mbps, while the 5.8GHz band offers throughput of up to 1200Mbps. To provide a wide Wi-Fi coverage, this ONU has four external antennas with 5dBi gain, two for 2.4Ghz and two for 5.8Ghz. The WiFi interface is 2x2 MIMO type, supporting UM-MIMO and Beamforming at 5.8Ghz, providing more efficient and stable connection.

This Wi-Fi interface is designed to support applications that require high data traffic. Four high-gain external antennas (two for 2.4GHz and two for 5GHz) mounted on two poles provide excellent coverage, which together with 2x2 MIMO and Beamforming at 5GHz, create a fast and stable Wi-Fi connection.

In addition to the Wi-Fi interface, the DM986-416 has four (04) Gigabit Ethernet LAN interfaces and an FXS interface, for the connection of analogue telephones, which allows the operation in VOIP telephony applications (Voice over IP).

The DM986-416 will also support the mesh network solution* through the Easymesh standard, expanding the network coverage. In this solution, the ONU works as the network controller, agent routers connect to it and distribute the signal forming a single network, providing a quality signal in places with low signal quality.

The ONU also has the remote management feature through the TR-069 protocol. With this resource, the ISP can manage all the devices installed in its subscribers through the cloud. Management by the TR-069 enables the ISP to perform remote diagnostics and tests, reducing operating costs. On the front of the DM986-414 we have LEDs indicating the following statuses: Power, PON, LOS, INTERNET, 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz, LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 and WPS.

On the rear panel, we have the following physical connections looking from left to right: FXS, 4 LAN ports, and Power input.

At the bottom of the DM986-416 we have the GPON SC/APC optical connector, which is protected, bringing more security to the installation. In addition, the equipment has an Integrated PTO, allowing a better installation of the fiber.

The most common application scenario for this equipment is the delivery of an internet link via GPON and distribution to the local network via Ethernet ports 1 to 4 and the 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz Wi-Fi interface.

Throughput Test

Throughput tests were performed as mentioned in the article ONU DM986-204:

The real throughput of the DM986-416 for 5.8Ghz is 900Mbps and for 2.4Ghz it is 400Mbps.
