Union Telecomunicações expands capacity with DWDM DM4920 from Datacom

Union Telecomunicações, a regional provider in Paraná, took a major step forward in its optical transport infrastructure by implementing Datacom’s DM4920 DWDM solution. With this modernization, the operator was able to expand its transmission capacity to 400G over a 250 km link, ensuring greater efficiency and scalability to meet the growing demand for connectivity in the region.

The challenge of network expansion

Union PR already had a photonic infrastructure based on FOADM (Fixed Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer), but needed to expand its capacity without compromising the stability and quality of the services provided. Given this scenario, the company found the DM4920 to be the ideal solution to optimize its long-distance network.

According to Lucas Stolfo, CTO of Union Telecomunicações, the first project implemented with the DM4920 consisted of a 400GB link over an existing FOADM photonic infrastructure, equipped with 100GHz filters. The route between Point A and Point B has a total length of 250 km, with five spans. Of these, three are intermediate, one exclusively configured as OLA (Optical Line Amplifier) and the other two equipped with ADD/DROP via 40-channel MUX/DEMUX.

During implementation, Datacom closely monitored the entire process, ensuring that the DM4920 was integrated into the Union Telecomunicações network with maximum efficiency. Datacom's Research & Development (R&D) team was available to make adjustments and provide specialized technical support, ensuring that the solution operated with the best possible performance.

The approval phase involved rigorous performance and stability tests, conducted in partnership with the Union Telecomunicações technical team. The equipment remained in the testing phase for 90 days, during which time improvements were made to ensure the reliability of the solution. With the successful implementation and the absence of operational failures, the DM4920 was officially put into production, consolidating its robustness and efficiency.

The partnership with Datacom

To make this modernization possible, Union Telecomunicações chose Datacom as a strategic supplier. The decision was based on Datacom's ability to offer specialized technical support, high-performance solutions and close alignment throughout the implementation process. The operator had direct access to Datacom's technical and commercial teams, allowing for precise adjustments and optimizations to the solution.

According to Lucas Stolfo, CTO of Union Telecomunicações, the main factors that led to the choice of Datacom were:

  • Specialized technical support: active collaboration with the R&D team for adjustments to DmOS (Datacom's operating system);
  • Superior performance of Datacom's QSFP-DD compared to competing solutions;
  • Advantageous cost-benefit ratio for a large-scale project;
  • Early testing and approval of the solution before final implementation.

Network Topology and Implementation

The modernization of Union’s infrastructure followed a detailed plan, ensuring seamless integration of the DM4920 into the existing network. Check out the main technical aspects of the implementation:

  • Topology: DWDM optical link with 5 spans and total distances of 250 km;
  • Configuration: FOADM, 100GHz filters, ADD/DROP with 40-channel MUX/DEMUX;
  • Infrastructure: Integration with photonic layer (optical amplifiers - AMP and MUX/DEMUX);
  • Capacity: Support for 400G transmission.
