Launch DM4616: An XGS-PON solution for corporate and premium residential services

At the forefront of optical network technology, XGS-PON is an innovative solution that allows 10Gbps traffic symmetrically. This technology, which has been gaining ground and being increasingly adopted in Brazil, represents a significant leap forward in terms of capacity and speed. This article introduces the DM4616, Datacom's latest OLT (Optical Line Terminal), specifically designed to support and drive the adoption of this rising technology standard.

Applications and Gradual Adoption of XGS-PON

Similar to the other GPON OLTs in our portfolio, the DM4616 is fully prepared for a variety of applications demanded by the telecom market. This includes offering Triple Play services (data, voice and video), and applications for digital cities, thanks to its 'future-proof' concept.

In this context, where the market demands versatile and scalable solutions, we recognize that the adoption of XGS-PON technology will be a gradual process, mainly due to the cost of ONUs (Optical Network Units). For that reason, the DM4616 was designed in a compact way and with an initial focus on premium applications. This design allows operators to light some PON branches of their networks with this technology, without a large initial investment, thus making a smooth and cost-effective transition to the XGS-PON era.

Technical Details and Functionalities of the OLT DM4616

The DM4616 is a compact OLT designed for 19-inch Racks. On the front, it has 4 XGS-PON ports, with a Split Ratio of 1:256, supporting up to 1024 clients per OLT. In addition, the OLT features 4 Uplink 10GBE ports, compatible with SFP/SFP+. The DM4616 also has MGMT and management console ports, as well as slots for equipment power supplies (AC or DC).

The OLT DM4616 is fully managed by Datacom's management software, DmView. It supports class N1 and N2 GPON modules, and has hardware-direct processing, making it 'wirespeed non-blocking'.

Coexistence with GPON and Usage Scenarios

Understanding the growing need for adaptability in the telecommunications world, an important aspect that deserves special attention is the ability of the OLT DM4616 to allow the coexistence of XGS-PON and GPON on the same optical fiber. This feature facilitates the progressive transition of services, making a change without interruptions.

To better illustrate this potential, we present below one of the possible scenarios. In the provider's PoP (Point of Presence), where an OLT GPON probably already exists, the OLT XGS-PON DM4616 would be installed in parallel. To guarantee the coexistence of the two signals in the same fiber, it is necessary to use the WDM1r multiplexer. Although this device introduces about a 1dB signal loss, it allows the network to be upgraded without interrupting existing service. On the client side, the only necessary change is the replacement of the ONUs as the XGS-PON services are requested.

Look at the following diagram to better understand this scenario:

Conclusion

In summary, Datacom's OLT XGS-PON DM4616 is a perfect solution to start operations for customers with broadband applications, Triple Play services and corporate services that require higher bandwidth. Its ability to support both XGS-PON and GPON gives operators the flexibility to adapt their networks to their customers' evolving needs, while maximizing the utilization of their existing fiber optic infrastructures. Furthermore, the DM4616 supports a variety of usage scenarios. For more examples of how the DM4616 can be implemented and how GPON and XGS-PON coexistence can benefit your network, we recommend watching the product introduction video mentioned earlier in this article. With the DM4616, Datacom reaffirms its commitment to providing flexible and future-proof solutions for the telecommunications market.
