DWDM DM4900: A Constantly Evolving Platform

Datacom is constantly committed to improving its products, ensuring solutions that meet the growing demands of the telecommunications market. A clear example of this commitment is the DWDM DM4900 platform, which, with each new version of the DmOS software, receives updates that expand its capabilities and functionalities, becoming even more efficient and reliable for customers.

A Compact and Flexible Design

The DM4900 is a compact and flexible DWDM solution designed to serve both metro networks and data center interconnection (DCI) applications. Its modular architecture allows adaptations as needed, supporting applications such as dark fiber lighting and Lambda Alien integrations into existing DWDM networks.

Typical Applications

Among the main applications of the DM4900, the following stand out:

  • Lambda Alien: Integration with existing DWDM networks, expanding capacity in a compact and efficient way.

  • DWDM Optical Cover: Dark fiber lighting, providing a robust solution to extend connectivity in scenarios where existing infrastructure is not yet in active use.

In practice, the most common scenarios for applying the DM4900 include:

  • Increased Traffic Capacity: Ideal for networks that need to increase traffic on installed optical lines, where there are no more fiber pairs available and the cost of laying new cables is high.
  • Fiber Sharing: Ideal technology for sharing the cost of building fibers between partners, such as ISPs, using X DWDM channels for each operator.
  • Optimization in Metropolitan Regions: Allows you to pass more fiber optic cables in areas where the existing infrastructure is not viable, whether for cost reasons or regulatory limitations.

These applications make the DM4900 a strategic choice for providers looking to efficiently maximize the use of their optical networks.

Transport Capacity and Versatility

The DM4900 stands out for its pay-as-you-grow modular architecture, allowing customers to start with a 400G interface and expand up to 4 400G transponders, totaling 1.6 Tbps of DWDM traffic. This scalability makes it a highly competitive solution in terms of cost-benefit.

Furthermore, the equipment supports 400G multirate transponders, and is also compatible with 100G and 200G rates. This flexibility is essential for applications that demand high capacity and performance in different scenarios, whether in metropolitan or rural regions.

The compact design of the DM4900, with a height of 2U, integrates amplifiers, optical switches and Mux/Demux in a single device, simplifying installation and reducing the space required in the datacenter. The platform also features high availability hardware, with redundant and hot-swap sources and fans, ensuring greater reliability and ease of maintenance.

Added Features

Recently, DmOS, which is the software that manages the platform, has received important advances, including:

  • Optical Switch: Developed to increase network protection and availability, the Optical Switch allows the configuration of redundant paths. In cases of link failure, traffic is automatically switched to the alternative path, ensuring continuity without noticeable interruptions. This is especially useful in critical scenarios, such as connections between POPs or data centers.

  • OSC Channel (Optical Supervisory Channel): This functionality adds an effective remote management layer, using a dedicated optical fiber channel to monitor and manage network equipment. The OSC Channel eliminates the need to open main traffic, reducing risk and simplifying maintenance and diagnostic operations.

  • Link Propagation: Optimizations that allow more efficient propagation of optical links, ensuring stability even in high demand networks. This functionality improves communication between equipment and reduces losses on long links, contributing to greater operational reliability.

Innovations on the Horizon

Throughout the year, new improvements are planned for the DWDM line, including the development of a Raman Amplifier Board and Embedded OTDR for the DM4900. This resource will allow a significant increase in network reach, reinforcing Datacom's commitment to solutions that meet market needs.

The DM4900 reflects Datacom's commitment to providing useful information and solutions to its customers, prioritizing quality and efficiency. With each update, the platform becomes even more robust and adaptable, ensuring that our customers can count on cutting-edge technology for their network infrastructures.
